Formal and independent creative study has included courses focused on speculative fiction and world-building, imaginative storytelling, screenwriting and dramatic characters, nonlinear storytelling, literary narrative, magical realism, thriller structure, psychological depth, cultural identity, and innovative narrative systems. Writers and creators studied include Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman, Dan Brown, Shonda Rhimes, David Lynch, Salman Rushdie, James Patterson, Joyce Carol Oates, Amy Tan, and N. K. Jemisin. The author learned English watching “Gilmore Girls” and “Family Guy”. That should tell the story.
